Clean skincare has a reputation problem.
For years, "clean" meant removing things — parabens, sulphates, synthetic fragrance, the long list of ingredients that wellness culture decided were bad. The result was a wave of products that were gentle, natural-feeling, and largely ineffective. Skincare that smelled like a spa and did very little for your skin.
We built F+A on a different idea. Clean doesn't mean weak. It means intentional.
What we mean by clean
When we talk about clean formulations, we're not talking about a marketing checklist. We're not chasing certifications for their own sake or removing ingredients because they have long names.
We mean that every ingredient in every F+A product is there for a reason. It performs a specific function — active, supportive, or protective. If it doesn't contribute meaningfully to what the product does, it doesn't make it in.
This rules out a lot. Unnecessary fillers that bulk up a formula without adding benefit. Synthetic fragrances that make products smell appealing but serve no skincare function and are a leading cause of contact dermatitis. Colourants. Certain preservative systems with questionable safety profiles. Microplastics.
What it doesn't rule out is efficacy. We use clinically proven actives at effective concentrations. We use synthetic ingredients where the synthetic version is more stable, more bioavailable, or more sustainable than its natural equivalent. We use what works.
The problem with most skincare
Walk into any pharmacy or beauty retailer and you'll find hundreds of products making similar claims. Brightening. Hydrating. Anti-ageing. Barrier-supporting.
Most of them contain the same hero ingredients at concentrations too low to do anything meaningful, padded out with water, emollients, and fragrance, wrapped in packaging that costs more than the formula inside.
This is the dirty secret of the skincare industry — most products are not formulated to perform. They're formulated to feel nice, smell nice, and photograph well. The efficacy is an afterthought.
We got tired of this. Not in an angry way — in a practical way. If you know what works and you have access to good manufacturing, why would you make anything else?
How we formulate
Every F+A product starts with a question: what does this skin concern actually need, and what's the most direct way to address it?
We work with our manufacturing partners — a COSMOS-certified facility that shares our commitment to ingredient quality and sustainable production — to develop formulations that put active ingredients first.
Concentrations matter. A Vitamin C serum at 0.1% Ascorbyl Glucoside will do almost nothing. Ours uses 2% — a concentration with clinical evidence behind it. A hyaluronic acid product that lists it eighth on the INCI is a marketing exercise. Ours puts it where it belongs.
We also pay attention to delivery. An active ingredient that can't penetrate the skin barrier is just expensive water. We choose ingredient forms with proven bioavailability — Ascorbyl Glucoside over unstable L-Ascorbic Acid, low and high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate at multiple skin depths, cold-pressed oils with intact fatty acid profiles rather than refined versions that have lost their beneficial properties.
What this means for your skin
It means fewer products that actually do more.
You don't need a ten-step routine if each step is genuinely effective. You don't need a serum for every concern if your serum is properly formulated to address multiple ones. You don't need to spend a lot if the money is going into the formula rather than the packaging.
This is what we mean when we say simple skincare, better skin. Not simple as in basic. Simple as in clear, purposeful, and free of everything that doesn't serve you.
Every product we make is something we'd want to use ourselves — and we do. That's the standard. Not a trend, not a certification, not a marketing brief.
Just ingredients that work, formulated with care, for skin that deserves better than filler.
